As a photographer, I look for the soul of a thing, be it a friend over for dinner, a dog dancing in the grass, a lone tree in a lonelier field. When shooting portraits, I like to spend time with people, getting a sense of who they are, what makes them laugh, what makes them strong. When shooting places, I look for a blend of tradition and surprise, classic themes mixed with hidden details. As a writer, I simply let my fingers fly, and the words come tumbling out like jacks onto a warped wooden floor. Sometimes the pattern makes sense; sometimes I need to throw them down again. The trick is not losing the ball behind the sofa.

My latest project, through the viewfinder, brings forgotten old twin-lens reflex cameras from the 1930s, 40s and 50s to life, giving contemporary subjects an old-school feeling without fancy Photoshop layers or texures:
